Best Time to Travel
The Philippines maintains hot and humid conditions throughout the year, with most of the rainfall occurring between June and October.
The Philippines can experience typhoons between this time bringing heavy rain, strong winds, and flooding. This poses significant risk to communities, infrastructure, and travel plans. Be sure to stay informed about weather updates. Heed any warnings or advisories issued by local authorities during typhoons season.
Optimal months to get the most out of your adventure are from December to February. These months are marked by cooler temperatures and generally drier weather, offering an ideal climate for exploration.
Visa
Tourists may enter the Philippines visa free for a maximum duration of 30 days for people from around 157 countries.
You may extend your visa for an additional 30 days for a fee of 3030 PHP. This must be done at the immigration offices in person. Be sure to plan for your extension as the immigration office are usually only on the main islands. For example, Manila, Cebu, Dumaguete.
Be sure to check the current entry requirements for your country.
Food
A delightful fusion of flavours, reflecting its diverse cultural influences from Malay, Spanish, Chinese and American cuisines. From savoury dishes like Adobo, a tangy stew of meat marinated in vinegar and soy sauce, to the beloved national dish, Sinigang, a sour soup bursting with tamarind flavour, meat, or seafood. Local food is way more affordable compared to western food, which is harder to come by depending on the size of the islands.
Don’t miss the street food favourites, Halo-Halo (a colourful dessert of shaved ice, fruits, beans, and sweet toppings). Isaw (grilled chicken or pork intestines skewered on sticks and usually dipped in a spicy vinegar sauce). Turon (slices of banana and sometimes jackfruit, rolled in brown sugar, and fried until crispy).
Transport
Getting around the Philippines, a large group of islands can be challenging with limited public transport options. We tried to find budget friendly choices.
Taking domestic flights in the Philippines is convenient, yet usually the most expensive way between the country’s numerous islands. However, it offers quick access to diverse destinations with breath-taking scenery from above.
Whilst in the bigger, more developed cities, you’ll find Jeepneys, iconic and colourful. These converted jeeps serve as the most common mode of public transportation, running fixed routes.
On smaller islands, get used to taking Tricycles, motorcycle-based vehicles with sidecars. They’re commonly used for short distances, able to navigate narrow streets and alleys with ease.
Buses, both local and provincial buses provide affordable and relatively comfortable long-distance travel between cities and regions. Be prepared to be flexible with your schedule as there is often a limited or non-existent schedule. It’s not uncommon to have to wait multiple hours for your bus to depart.
Ferries are the affordable yet time consuming mode of transportation most locals will usually always take. If you have the luxury of time, we highly recommend hopping on a few ferries. They’re cheaper and whether cruising between bustling ports or island hopping, it’s a leisurely and immersive way to experience the Philippines incredible seascapes.
12Go is a useful site to check Ferry/Bus schedules and book tickets, but often you will need to speak with locals and book directly at the local offices.
Budget
The Philippines is an ideal destination for budget-conscious travellers, offering affordable transportation and accommodation options to suit every pocket. Although accommodation prices may be higher than in other Southeast Asian countries, there are still plenty of ways to save, such as opting for Ferries and buses as your transport compared to domestic flights.
Accommodation: $20-$25
Food: $3-$15
Activities: $5-$40
Transport: $10
Alcohol: $1 (Local Filipino Rum)
You can use Get Your Guide for a trusted and reliable tour operator to pre-book some of your activities.
Currency & ATM
The currency used in The Philippines, is the Filipino Peso (PHP). $1 is currently equivalent to 56 PHP.
In main cities, we did not experience any issues with withdrawing money from ATMs. The further away and in more remote islands, it will be more difficult, so we highly recommend to always be sure you have enough cash withdrawn in advance.
Cash is widely accepted everywhere whereas payments by debit/credit card is not very common except in larger cities.
Large national and international banks, including CitiBank and HSBC, are popular choices for tourist. CitiBank offers free withdrawals from any ATM in the Philippines.
Safety
The Philippines is a generally safe country for tourists to visit whilst remaining in the hotspots. Of course they should remain vigilant and cautious, particularly in crowded areas.
When renting a bike or scooter in the Philippines, be sure to always wear your helmet.
It is important to stay informed about potential safety concerns in certain areas of the Philippines, as conditions can change suddenly. Keeping up to date of any developments that might impact your travel plans is crucial to ensuring a smooth and safe trip.
Always have travel insurance. We use Safety Wing for cover during our trip.
